Overview of Bishkek

Bishkek, formerly known as Pishpek and Frunze, serves as the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan. It also functions as the administrative center of the Chüy Region, situated near the Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan border. As of 2021, its population reached 1,074,075.

Historical Background

• In 1825, the Khanate of Kokand established the fortress of Pishpek to control local caravan routes and collect tribute.
• Russian forces, with Kyrgyz approval, destroyed the fortress in 1860, leading to the establishment of a Russian settlement named Pishpek.
• In 1925, Pishpek became the capital of the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast and was later renamed Frunze in 1926.
• Frunze became the capital of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic in 1936. In 1991, the Kyrgyz parliament changed the capital’s name back to Bishkek.
